COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
BREWED FOR UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT In the farthest, deepest fathoms of the ocean, light is but a rumor. That vast, benighted place is where the leviathans hold sway. Age of Leviathans, Surly’s BC Small Batch offering for September and October, reaches similar depths of flavor, sweetness, and body. Brewed with a new “ruby” chocolate variant—noted for being rich, fruity and just slightly tart—plus raspberry puree, lactose, and vanilla beans, it’s complex, rich, and rules all that it surveys.

NikkTwist (4993) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 6, 2022
UPDATED: JAN 6, 2022 Draft at Bru Craft. Pitch black pour with a thick khaki head. Lots of lace. Milky dark chocolate (I recognize the disconnect but the description seems apt.) Hints of raspberry, strawberry, and blackberry. S'pose that's ruby chocolate. Darkly sweet but has a good show of drying tannins. Feels gently boozy but the ABV is well hidden. A nice sipper.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2021 32oz crowler pours with a dark mahogany colored body that supports a nice tan head of foam. The modest aroma offers up chocolate and a sense of berry and then a bit of malt sweetness in the background. The taste delivers a pleasing load of chocolate goodness where it goes from velvety dark chocolate, to Ovaltine, to milk chocolate and then back to dark chocolate. Nice. Well below the thick mesa of chocolate are murmurs of mildly tangy berry and smooth sweet vanilla. This delivers a great chocolatey sipper experience where the ABV is almost too well hidden. This may actually benefit from a dash of boozy warmth. I like it.

ads135 (7114) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - DEC 20, 2021
UPDATED: DEC 20, 2021 This beer is thick. TONS of chocolate. So much that it more or less drowns out the vanilla, and the raspberry is the lightest of accents. Super thick sweetness from beginning to end. A bit much.

fidelis83 (3317) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - OCT 23, 2021
UPDATED: OCT 23, 2021 Black pour with a tall tan head. Aroma of sweet chocolate and overripe tree fruit and berries, berry syrup and a little roast. Flavor is sweet and mild chocolate, light raspberries and hints of overripe mixed berries in the finish. Heavy body, syrupy and sticky, some carbonation, but it has a hard time fighting through all that sugar. It's not terrible, but it's definitely not great. Really kinda one note.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2021 16oz can. Poured a black color with a smaller sized tan head. Chocolate, vanilla, roasty, and raspberries with a lighter tart finish. Smooth lactose body. Chocolate covered raspberries.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2021 Black pour with a beige head and spots of lacing …. Aroma of milk chocolate, raspberry, lactose, vanilla and roasted malts …. Taste is of vanilla, sweet lactose, milk chocolate, roasted malts, tart raspberry and bitter dry hops ….. abv is hidden well …. Thick bodied …. Finish is bitter, dry with lingering chocolate, roasted malts and sweet lactose … solid impy stout, but not a world beater. Extra point for keeping most of the lactose toned down
