UPDATED: MAY 21, 2019 16 oz. can, pours a cloudy bright orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out orange rinds, orange juice, and resinous hops. Flavour brings out lots of resinous and piney hops, oranges and citrus rinds. Orangey and juicy. It’s alright.

Dark orange body, off-white foamy head. Strong aroma of resin and pine. Taste is a wallop of the same, with the addition of some bready maltiness and a nice amount of bitterness. This is a great APA.

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2018 Pours a clear orange with white head and lacing. Nice candy orange aromas and flavours. Bitterness on the finish to balance the sweetness. Very nice

Can. Hazy dark gold in colour with medium carbonation. Simple aromas of red grapefruit and clean pale malt. Flavors of artificial grapefruit, white pepper, caramel, husky pale malt, and alfalfa sprouts(?). Medium bodied with a solid bitterness. A bit timid and simplistic by regular Surly standards, but still decent.

I really liked this pale ale. Pretty mild (by Surly standards). Very crisp beer, clean grass and pine bite. A little biscuit sweetness. Picked up I at Zipps and tried at Northern Lights in 2018.

Can from Craft Brewed. Pours a clearish, deep gold with a finger of foam that dissipates into a ring. Nice lacing the whole way down. Citrus aromas with black tea, pear blossom and apricot notes. Soft and smooth on the palate, medium carbonation with some stone fruit notes, toasted caramel and tea. Citrusy bitterness on the finish that lingers with some pine and resin that hang around. Quite good.

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow, with smallish head. Aroma is quite grassy, with a nice bouquet of fruit. Flavor also quite grassy, with more than a little malt and biscuit flavors. There's some citrus at work in there, too, and some pine/spruce hop bite in the finish. It's a pale ale, all right.

Well hell, this is one of those American-brewed Pale Ales that actually tastes like a Pale Ale. If you're a person who is accustomed to the Surly's typically aggressive hop approach, Rising North will shake up expectations. Color is a relatively clear yellow-orange. Fruity and grassy hops on the nose. This brew is fresh but not bracing. Slightly resinous and piney hop chewiness up front that goes in a maltier direction at the middle of the mouth to reveal biscuit malt character. Crisp and mildly juicy finish. It doesn't really do anything new, but it sure does satisfy.
