COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned, 500ml and unpasteurised keg; Regular. ABV may vary slightly. Kernel have begun regularly serving draft Export India Porter with the hops prominently labeled. As such there are again separate entries of this beer (as of January 2020). Any release where the hop variation is not clear should be rated using this entry. The Export India Porter relates to porter in similar manner to the way the IPA relates to the Pale Ale: they added more hops. We’ve taken Barclay Perkins recipe from 1855, but changed the hops to Columbus and Cascade (American varieties) and hopped it in the same way that we hop our IPAs. The result is a dark brown beer that smells of cocoa, roses, and some orange. The body is quite light, and it is carbonated more highly than usual for a porter to make it more refreshing. It’s quite light in texture and tastes of Turkish delight dusted with cocoa powder – chocolate, rose water and fruit. Dry finish.

DraftDodger (5615) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - JAN 7, 2022
UPDATED: JAN 7, 2022 Copenhagen 7/1 2022. 33 cl bottle from Mikkeller & Friends Bottleshop, Torvehallerne, Kbh. K. Brown rough label with simple black writing. Just the name of the beer and brewery. Pours opaque dark brown with a big beige head. Settles as thin, frothy and consistent layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Massive lacing. Aroma is medium intense with a sweet, malty and roasted odor mingling with fresh citric notes. Brings a Black IPA to mind. Dark roasted malts, caramel and dark chocolate. A whiff of grapefruit and citrus. Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, soft, smooth texture. A bit flat but pleasant. Flavor is fairly intense with a fairly strong sweetness followed and balanced by a medium strong bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter. Lingers for a while. Finish is dry. Nicely balanced between the sweet and toasty and the bitter and citric. Good one.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2021 50 cl bottle (bottling date 2020-11-11, BBD 2021-11-11), bought from Hop Burns & Black, drunk at home 2021-02-18. Hops in this gyre - Centennial, Nelson Sauvin and Mandarina Bavaria. Appearance is a surprising opaque black with a very thick and incredibly dense coffee-crema-coloured head on the surface that lingers a reasonable amount of time. Could be visible carbonation, but who knows?! It's so dark you'd never see it. I actually really like this style of appearance for a dark beer - just slightly surprising on a porter which I'd expect to be a bit lighter. Aroma is playing heavy on the roasted malts. Burn and char rather than toastiness for sure. There's a hint of spice and a touch of something else - maybe coffee beans? Or very dark dried fruits? It's rather nice, but it is a bit one-note and fainter than I'd expect. Taste is bolder. Strong note of dark chocolate, some lighter coffee, a very - very - slight caramel hint and a fair whack of roasted bitterness towards the end. It's quite well-balanced and pleasant - I expected more char after the nose, but pleased it's more subtle instead. Palate is practically perfect. Silky smooth round and full-bodied in the mouth with a touch of in-mouth carbonation playing on the tongue, before a long cleaner but drying finish. For this flavour palate, I don't think I could identify any ways it could improve. Overall, this is clearly an exceptionally well-made beer. Great colour with a well-held head and a perfect palate. But something about it just isn't doing it for me. Maybe I'm just not a really dark porter fan, given I like the fruity notes of most porters. Worth a try definitely to see if it appeals. Just not quite my cup of tea.
