COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is made with one grain and 4 Belgian yeasts, a deceptive golden color, and a malty palate lend complexity to this Belgian Trippel Ale. ABV = 10%, IBU’s = 31, OG = 23.1 P

The three headed Hellhound of Greek Mythology, that stood at the gates to Hades, lends his name and three heads to this elegant, full bodied Belgian Style Trippel Ale. A deceptive golden color and wonderful malty palate bring bold complexity to this big brew.

slightly hazy gold color; spicy Belgian yeast aroma; spicy, fruity, slightly sweet Belgian yeast flavor; a pretty decent tripel

12 oz. bottle from Root Cellar. Pours a cloudy orange with yeast sediment and a small off-white head that settles into a thin film. Notes of sugar cookie, dried fruits (apricot, raisins, figs), honey, toffee, booze, earth, mild spice, and some floral resin. Full-bodied, with a thick, chewy, boozy, sweet mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. This is what I think of when I think of earlier American craft examples of a tripel. Not exactly as elegant as the label says.

Relatively clear deep copper coloured body with a lot of suspended particles noticeable, a very thin tan head and a few bubbles roaming around. Aroma of bread, heavy yeast, alcohol, honey, grain and a faint hint of citrus. Light to perhaps Medium-bodied; Assertive orange and curacao flavours at first with an odd acidity, then showing some bread, yeast, alcohol, grain and hints of caster sugar and honey near the end. Aftertaste shows a bit more body and depth, but fairly mild, especially for the style, with some bread, pungent yeast, dry grassy and hay flavours and a touch of citrus and curacao at the end couples with the yeast and alcohol. Overall, a rather mellow, simple and unassuming tripel that shows a touch more character and complexity at the end, but the initial tastes and especially the body are much different and less typical than I expected. Still nice to try, perhaps a bit fresher to get [oddly enough, that I’d actually want it more?] a more pungent, distinctive and aggressive flavour profile. I sampled this gold foil sealed twelve ounce bottle purchased from Murray’s Cheese in New York (Greenwich Village), New York on 20-June-2015 for US$4,99 sampled at home in Washington on 23-April-2017. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. The typical spiciness and bitterness that I find come with a lot of tripels isn’t there and is instead sweet and very nice on the nose. This is a strong showing.

Poured from a bottle. Pours a very cloudy caramel brown like apple cider. A lot of sediment. Strong, sweet caramel toffee aroma. Flavors of semi-sweet toffee with a strong alcohol feel underneath. Not harsh but a nice warm finish. Interesting! Feels more like a barley wine than a tripel.

GABF 2015. Hazy orange color, can almost see through it. White head on top. Very sweet, almost cloying, honey and nutmeg, I might be getting a little apple. Alcohol is well hidden.
