American Sour in wine barrels with blueberries

In order to survive in the 14th century one needed to be a force to be reckoned with. In Brittany, Spain and France this knight proved his mettle in battle. This tart blueberry ale was brewed in one of our 3000 gallon foeders in his honour.

UPDATED: NOV 6, 2021 Beer is too sour for me. Romans art vinegar blueberries. I thought there was going to be some Sweetness in there but it's fairly dry and the sour dominates everything by far.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2021 12oz bottle from Craft Beer Cellar in Pewaukee. The 6% version. Reddish purple pour with an off-pink head. Aroma has big funk, sour berry, oak, and tart fruits. Big strong components. Very nice. Taste is of funk, tannic berries, big tart cherry, oak, and sweet fruits. Slightly oily. This is big, tart, and sour, with great funk. Gorjusgirl says she feels she is at Funk Factory. Full bodied, the blend is very good. Finishes sweetly tart. Wow! Cannot say this was expected. Excellent. Possibly enjoy FFF's sour/wild program as much as any nowadays. 16.3

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2021 12 oz bottle thanks to daalamar and the 2020 holiday beer exchange! Listed as 8.9% abv on the label. Pours a deep purple brown with bubbly tan foam that dissipates quickly to leave minimal lace. Aroma of a hit of acetic acid up front, then a tart berry note, followed by ethyl acetate that keeps going back and forth between nail polish remover and tropical fruit. Taste follows, a touch of sweetness from the fruit, a huge tartness from the bacteria and fruit. A little too much of the nail polish remover for me, not really what you expect from 3 Floyd's and they missed the boat.

Scipio (2133) - Palatine, Illinois, USA - FEB 3, 2021
UPDATED: FEB 3, 2021 Pours a deep red with a thin beige head. The nose is very sour, consisting of potent cherry and blueberry, some oak, plum, and subtle spice. The intensity of the sourness continues in the taste. More grape and cherry are found over the advertised blueberry. Oak is prevalent, as well as minor earthy tones, apple, and pepper. Blueberry does linger into the finish. Dry and lightly sweet, its medium bodied and sticky in texture. This is an elite sour.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2020 A 1 pint 9.4 fl. oz. blue-ish grey waxed bottle, with no clear bottled on or best before date (although I expect this to have been cellared 5 to 6 years maybe). Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass. It was a hazy orange brown colour with a two fingered off white cream head that dissipated fairly quickly but settled to a thin continually replenishing layer, while leaving some nice lacing. Aromas tart, blueberry skin, blueberry, mixed berries, cherry, plum, acetone, oak, with notes of citrus zest. Tastes light to moderate sweet and sour, tart, blueberry, cherry, blackcurrant, Ribena, plum, oak, lemon zest, with a sweet jammy finish. Medium bodied with moderate spritzy carbonation. Overall, enjoyable aroma and flavours that just worked for me. It was aged 5 or 6 years in my cellar, and actually, I can’t help but feel that it was better than I used to remember.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2019 (750ml bottle shared @ Nische's tasting, thanks to Niko!) Pours slightly purple-tinged amber to brown with a small off-white head. Notes of heavily tangy and tart berries, blueberries not pronounced per se, slightly bitter berry skin, fruit vinegar, drying wood that's leathery, some nutty toasty quality, soft grassy funk, maybe some lactic acidity in there too. Moderately sour finishing dry and somewhat tannic, a bit dusty, softly fruity, lingering acetic acid. Medium bodied with rather soft carbonation. A little too heavy on the vinegar for me, not too bright on the fruit, I think a bit past its best.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2019 Taster, many thanks to Werckmeister! Aroma of balsamico, leather, overripe fruits, blueberries, red wine, ripe apples. Tastes similar, with moderate funk, some green apples. Medium, slick mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. Finishes quite dry, moderate sour, a bit sweet, leathery, tannic, moderate vinegary, with ripe dark fruits, blueberry, green apple skin. Tasty. Quite on the vinegary side, while not the acidic one, but sweeter, balsamico-like. Otherwise lovely leathery, tannic and ripe fruit notes, very well balanced and smooth to drink. Really interesting, dark Sour. Score: 7 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 16
