Brigadier (4590) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - APR 29, 2021
UPDATED: APR 29, 2021 650 ml bottle Usually old ales age well. This one felt as if even with a moderate amount of time in a cool dark room it was already evolving. Even so it showed the balance and skill present in most Toppling Goliath releases. Given a choice I might have gone for an IPA but this one didn't disappoint. AROMA / APPEARANCE Dusty bookshelf, cedar plank, and caramel lapse into a pleasant mellow cloud. The carbonated bronze base rests below a billowing white head. Calm and cool, it soaks up the ambient light. FLAVOR / PALATE Warm caramel, toffee, and oak compete with butterscotch and dusty forest floors. The flavors eventually find equilibrium as the full bodied finish glows on the throat. An ideal winter warmer probably isn't quite as enjoyable out of season but hit the spot in late winter.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2021 Review 3/21/2021 of a liquor store bomber. Per TG, toasted malts and aged on a bed of oak (probably chips). nose of slight dank oak wood; Amber orange hue with tan lacy head; full velvet mouthfeel with smooth slightly boozy carbonation; Nice subtle bitter oak taste with caramel notes finishing with an immediate lingering dry hop back throat bitterness. In 2016, I had the original English IPA version of Naughty 90 (retired). I found this new version with the following differences...Original was oak barrel kegged and it was reflected in a stronger taste of oak. The new version has more caramel malt. Mouthfeel for both was similar. The nose on the new version has a more prominent dank oakiness to it. Original had more bitterness...new version more caramel. They both rate about the same for me, but the original N90 is just a bit better than this one.

UPDATED: AUG 3, 2019 Had this out of season and got a tad overheated, but overall found joy in its intense hop and malt flavors (100 IBU? not sure about that) and dug the funky finish that's oaky sweet and delicious.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2019 Draft at Bru Craft. Cloudy chestnut pour with an off-white foamy ring. Grassy oaky caramel flavors. Toffee. Carob. Treacle. Hints of tobacco, leather, and charcoal. Sweet up front but a very dry tannic finish. Good but not great.
