COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unique and limited edition, this Belgian style ale is crafted once a year as a special treat for those of you who appreciate flavorful, bottle conditioned ales with character. Our Vintage Ale is a rich , dark and full-bodied ale with a fine and generous coffee-colored beige foam. It’s ready to enjoy right away and you may also wish to cellar a few bottles. It will evolve interestingly well, developing more complex flavors as the years go by. Keep the bottle upright in storage. Brewed with a delicate balance of noble hops, roasted malts and spices, this is a remarkably smooth ale with a wonderfully complex finish. It is best served slightly chilled, around 53 degrees Fahrenheit and pairs exceptionally well with grilled salmon steaks, curried lamb, beef, or tuna au poivre. Crafted and bottled exclusively for Trader Joe’s.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2020 Quarantine Beer #117 sampled at home on 05/07/2020. Dark brown with some mahogany around the edges, and a medium light beige head that diminishes steadily to a film. Small patches of lace. Yeast, fruit and malt in the nose. Medium to full body with flavors of Belgian yeast, caramel malt and dark fruit. The finish is fruity yeast and sweet malt. Pretty good overall.

RSRIZZO (2264) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - SEP 12, 2020
UPDATED: SEP 12, 2020 This is a 5 year old bottle courtesy of headbanger. Color is a deep dark near black amber. Carbonation is very active creating a tall rocky head. Aroma is sweet with notes of dark fruit. It has a full body smooth mouthfeel. Flavors is sweet, like malt candy, some dark fruit comes in and a very light bitterness. Aftertaste is clean with just a little bit of the sweetness hanging on. Overall this may be just a little too long for this brew to sit before opening.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2019 This was aged about 3+ years. Held up quite well, so might have a slightly better rating than if fresh. I had forgotten it was brewed by Unibroue while in the cellar, so went into it expecting a little less. It's a malty dark Belgian-style ale. Has a fruity and yeasty finish and aroma. Dark brown appearance with a thin light mocha head. Semi-creamy smooth texture. Alcohol hidden well for 9%. Reminds me kind of like a maltier/stronger version of Unibroue's Maudite. Wish I had grabbed another one of these...as the price was a bargain for the quality.

Nicely done dark Belgian ale. Good though not incredible, sweet not cloying. No head. Ageing likely helped as not yeasty.

750 ml bottle with a Unibroue cork and cage seal served in a pint glass. BB date of 3-10-2018. Loosening the cork immediately resulted in a vigorous pop but no ale rose out the top of the bottle. A gentle pour produced a moderate size, overly bubbly head that slowly settled to a durable, creamy, beige top. The very dark reddish brown body is clear but essentially opaque in the glass. Excellent mouthfeel with a creamy smooth feel in a full body. Lively but soft carbonation. The aroma is spicy, yeasty and complex. Moderately strong. Flavor: dark fruits and spices come to the fore in a complex array of spice, yeast, grain and fruit notes. Nice but too much spicing. Bitter and sweet present in about equal measure.

January 28, 2016 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs & mabel - 750ml bottle. These are always solid - but hard to find different descriptors. Deep brick red with solid and lasting foamy tan head. Aroma is that classic dark Unibroue Belgian yeast and fruit and alcohol; taste follows, a bit light with appleseed bitterness. Thin body, airy if not overly carbonated, finishes a bit quick ... seemed a bit weaker than past years.

GTAEgeek (4660) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - FEB 4, 2018
Bomber, shared with Albert. Pours black, with a medium, bubbly, tan head. The aroma is apple pie spice, dates, molasses, and toasted oak. Sweet and syrupy, with a light bitterness. Medium body, with a lively, thick mouthfeel. This is a reasonably nice, spiced beer.

Dec. 2017 vertical at the Goose Island staff bottle share. The first bottle in our 2009-2017 vertical to show something "off." There may have either been a material infiltration, or it lay on its side and got corked. This just adds a note of funk to an otherwise malty beer series.
