COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2021 It pours dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is very good. It is clear for the most part. Strong rich malty aroma with raisins. There are some dried cherry notes a very low spice and and very light vanilla. It is malty rich with bread and raisin flavors. There are dried cherries at moderate levels with a light spice and perfume. It has a full body and is quite dry in the finish. There is alcohol warming at pleasant levels. Overall, a great blend of flavors and aromas.

LagerGuide122 (803) - - FEB 11, 2021
UPDATED: FEB 11, 2021 750ml bottle brewed in Belgium at 9.5%. Purplish dark-brown with a generous, longlasting tight-bubbled head. Dark sweet plum with some notes of cherry cola, some lurking banana and biscuit in the aroma too. Thick rich mouthfeel, lowish carbonation. Fruity, dark, luscious. Dark plum and black grape complexity gives it a flavour profile approaching port, with some lightening herbal hops and banana yeast towards the end. Faint cola and clove spice, with chocolate developing with warmth. Robust Kingsmill 50/50 bready malt supporting. Superbly rich and decadent, but possibly a little straightforward for the style. Still, you can't go wrong here, and it's hard to fault a beer for being easy-drinking, let alone at this ABV.

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2020 Pullo @ Alko. Kaatuu trappistiin kuparin ruskeana ja hieman reunoilta valoa läpäisevänä, kuohkea ja tiivis vaahto on noin parin sormen paksuinen. Tuoksu on hieman mieto, mutta selkeitä aromeja on. Kuivattua hedelmää, sokerista maltaisuutta, hieman marjaisuutta ja mausteisuuttakin löytyy. Yrttisyyttäkin on aivan pikkuisen mukana.

rinosseros (16) - - MAY 7, 2020
UPDATED: MAY 7, 2020 Look: ruby red brown, nicely scintillating. Nice head, less lacing Smell: lots of bread, a little fruitiness (plum?) Taste: sweet! Sweeter than I thought, but some chocolate bitterness afterwards. Seemingly straightforward taste, but it slowly reveals hidden secrets and complex hooks along the way. You start to wonder if it was oak aged. Feel: full-bodied, very long aftertaste. Overall: at first it seems a typical Achel beer: no-nonsense, very decent, always nice to drink but lacking a bit of depth. But with a second, third and the following sips it reveals to be a very high quality beer with lots of taste.

DraftDodger (5615) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - JAN 24, 2020
UPDATED: JAN 24, 2020 Kulhuse 6/7 2017, 75 cl bottle from Den Belgiske Ølbutik. Shared with my Father in law. Very simple label in brown and white stating that this is an Extra Bruin with a healthy ABV. Pours hazy maroon with very big brownish head. Settles as several centimeters thick dense layer of foam. Massive lacing. Aroma is rather sweet. Dark fermented fruit, quite sugary, solid odor of humid cellar. Soft carbonation and medium thick texture. Flavor is very sweet bordering on the sugary followed by light bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and a little boozy. Quite sweet but it feels not oppressively heavy. A solid bruin who manages to feel light and pleasant.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2019 Bottle. Hazy dark brown with small beige head. Aroma of sweet malt, candies, vanilla. Taste, sweet malt, candies, fruity, candied fruits. Alcohol is dangerously hidden. Nice one.
