Ernest (9030) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 10, 2021UPDATED: MAY 10, 2021 Can (BB Sep 29, 2021). Head is initially average sized to large, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs), lightly yeasty (basement, cobwebs), with notes of peppercorn, clove, gum, lemon zest. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation.
Very spicy (almost to the point of seeming spiced) rather than fruity, but that's how I'd rather a saison aroma lean anyway. Quite dry and attenuated in the mouth, almost too stark to be enjoyable, but better that than too sweet. Overall it's pretty decent, just sorta brutish and lacking in elegance or nuance. Good for an American attempt, though.
