82 This place is in a really unusual location, basically a small white bungalow behind another house-looking business. I mean, this is literally a small house. The bar is in the left of the ’living room’, with more seating in a ’dining room’ just behind it, and two ’bedrooms’ have more shelves of bottles. It’s not the nicest house, but it’s got its charms. There are plenty of bottles in a well curated selection. There are 8 taps, always changing, always good stuff, never repeating, with a good mix of locals, regionals, and interesting national crafts. Prices are fair, and proper glassware is provided. The one employee on duty really knew his stuff. It’s an unusual spot but definitely worth visiting if you’re in this area. |
84 Ambiance: Yep, it’s in a house, behind another house. Small gravel parking lot. Inside, yep: it’s a house, with a small bar area in the "kitchen/living room", and a couple of "bedrooms" that feel like they’re out of a kidnapping movie what with the blankets thumbtacked over the windows, but full of shelves of beer so that’s ok. Service: Just great. Seems a local hangout with lots of regulars. Bar staff more than willing to shoot the breeze and offer a few samples of whatever they have on tap, and even a bottle or two if they’re already open. Selection: About 8 taps, which is what they have room for, with a decent enough selection of cans and bottles in those bedrooms. Value: Way better than what I’m used to. Overall: A fun, quirky little place that is absolutely worth the stop if you’re in town. |
82 Visited late afternoon on a Friday. As I approached, I was nervous that the place was out of business. Turns out it is just the Haircut building in front that is closed. House of Brews is behind that main building, in a smaller house. Parking is in a gravel lot between the two buildings. As mentioned by others, this is a true house of brews - old renovated house that has a small bar to the left, beers in the main section, and two rooms to the right that house “New World” and “Old World” beers. All beers are sold as singles, and are available on site or to go. Selection is 8 beers on draft, well selected, many interesting local options. Bottle selection is similar, not every beer under the sun, but what they do have is well chosen and all very interesting. There is also a large outdoor area to hang out. The staff was friendly, and was geeking out with everyone who came through the door. Very fun, down to earth spot. 82 = ★★★½ (Solid place, near the top of the list for locals and visitors) I only use the total score, not the component parts. |
92 Awesome location, awesome beer and awesome people. The 8 rotating taps always seem to have one of each style on, which is awesome to start with my favorite and then mix it up. The Old School and New School beer bottle rooms make it great for shopping before I head home! |
90 It’s literally a house full of beer. Very solid selection with some really nice odds and ends you don’t see anywhere else. Rob is a very nice and helpful dude. And you can drink while you shop or just hang out in the backyard and drink. Worth a visit while in Charleston area. |
92 Love this place, very chill. Owner very knowledgeable and willing to take time out to answer questions. Has an awesome back patio area where you can enjoy your beer. |
82 An old house with lots of nooks and crannies, and bottles in every one. Couple of coolers and a handful of taps, Very friendly and helpful. Worth a visit. |
88 Cool, very laid back place. Unassuming location. Always a good variety on tap, and a good selection of bottles in the cooler. Plus a really good cache of bottles for sale; always fun to explore the different goodies stashed in different parts of the place. It’s like drinking at a buddies house; a buddy with a really good beer selection. |
96 Frequent House of Brews quite often. Favorite place to purchase or drink beers in Charleston. 8 rotating taps, never two kegs back to back. Large cooler of cold beers, over 700 in the back two rooms. There is open mic on the weekends, large backyard, pet and child friendly. Although there is no food served, you can always bring your own or there are plenty of delivery options close by. The owner Rob is incredibly knowledgeable all the products he carry’s. He also has a fantastic selection of hot teas.
