COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A match made in heaven; Gelbvieh is a Thornbridge collaboration with Edinburgh’s own Newbarns. Pronounced ‘gel-fee’, Gelbvieh is a Franconian-style Kellerbier, and we simply love a Kellerbier! This is an unfiltered, beautifully-hazy, gold lager with a delicate floral taste and robust bitterness, along with slight hints of strawberry and melon. Wondering where the name comes from? Well, Gelbvieh is the name of a Bavarian breed of cattle, originally hailing from the Franconian region, and incidentally found at both Newbarn’s farm and in the grounds of Thornbridge hall, pretty neat, eh?

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2021 440ml can from Whole Foods Market in Kensington. No visible date code on can. Served fridge cold into a stein. The beer pours a straw gold colour, very hazy with a even one finger white head. The head dissipates to a paper thin layer. The aroma is dominated by sweet grain. Some fresh melon, pear, a little Belgian golden ale-esque. On taste the beer is sweet with a real spicy hop bite. Saaz? Earthy notes and cereal. Some fresh melon with a hint of bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation with a building bitter presence on the aftertaste. Long legs for the style. Overall, a very tasty beer. I’d imagine very easy to session. Good stuff.
